Essenza della Sicilia

Pit stop beneath the olive trees.
Bugatti, most of all. And Stanguellini, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, too. Automotive classics from the past century came to life as collectors drove them past the baroque splendor of towns such as Noto and Modica and splashed through rain-washed puddles on their way to the historic San Basilio farm in southeastern Sicily. There the classic cars rested in the olive groves to be admired while their passengers gathered for an afternoon merenda. They sampled gelato made with San Basilio’s Val di Noto almonds and Raffadali pistachios, with the perfect local accompaniment, Moscato di Noto, an ambrosial wine from vineyards near San Basilio. Here’s how the idea of a “pit stop beneath the olive trees” was born.

This stop was part of the event Essenza della Sicilia, which brought a small group of classic car collectors (Bugatti, Stanguellini, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo) to Sicily from October 9th through 16th, 2010. The visit introduced them to some of the most unique places in Sicily and the people behind them, revealing the cultural roots of this extraordinary island. Essenza della Sicilia was created by the Bugatti Club Italia to discover “off the map” little treasures, like San Basilio. This historical farm, built in 1855, has been owned and operated by the Padova family since 1888. Today it keeps producing superior quality almonds and olive oils, beloved by the finest and most demanding food artisans and gourmets all over the world.

That is how the mystique of racing met the rituals of the fields: over a simple moment to refresh after a long drive. That small feast capped the celebration of two events at once: the Sicilian grand tour of Bugatti and the beginning of the olive harvest at San Basilio.
